Kodak launches new Flexo system - 28-04-2010

KodakThe development of flexographic plate production systems has seen flexography go from being a poor relation in print to one of the leaders. Systems are available for digital platemaking, for plates without the need for the harmful solvents and systems which combine the best of both. However, the greatest developments have been made in the area of plate quality and plate production speed.

Kodak has now launched the Flexcel NX Digital Flexographic Systems, which is designed to produce the same high image quality that was produced using offset for printing onto folding cartons and applying it to flexible pouches, boxes, and labels. It uses high-quality and high-resolution flexo printing and is capable of generating dots as small as 10 microns.

The Flexcel NX System uses a unique thermal imaging layer in conjunction with the Kodak Flexcel plates. Once the thermal imaging layer has been exposed, it is laminated to the Flexcel plate. The imaging laer is exposed in the Kodak Trendsetter NX at a speed of up to 9,5 square metres per hour or half the time it takes to make a conventional digital flexo plate. The lamination process takes about two minutes.

The primary benefit of the Flexcel NX System can be see in the highlight areas of images. Analogue and digital laser ablative plates can only produce dots as small as 20 microns. This is circumvented with a ‘bump curve’ being applied to establish the minimum printing dot. The result is that that highlights are lost and shadows become filled in. The Flexcel NX System’s

ability to handle small dots means that finer details such as highlights and shadows can be accurately rendered without the need for a bump curve.

Another benefit of the Flexcel NX System is that conventional flexo dots are sensitive to the very pressures which are found in a flexo printing press. This leads to inconsistent printing results. The dots produced by the Flexcel NX System are flat-topped which means that they remain more consistent under pressure giving better overall quality.

The Kodak Flexcel NX Systems can be used for all types of flexographic printing including flexible packaging and cartons and labels. The strength of the system lies in its ability to produce digital flexographic plates faster and more consistently while still providing maximum flexibility.
